The watchalarm is intended for ships that sail home at night with a minimale crew on the bridge. The helmsman on watch duty has also, most likely, been on his feet for many hours and now has to gaurd the safe voyage of the ship. The watchalarm is intended to alert the helmsman when he or she neglects to reset the watchalarm within a certain time frame.

Activation of the watchalarm is done by means of a key switch. When activated the unit will start counting and the helmsman must reset it in time. A pre alarm will sound on the bridge when a reset does not occur. If there is no reaction to the pre alarm, by means of a reset, the watchalarm will sound the main alarm all over the ship and the key switch is the only way to deactivate the alarm (sound).
